A good gout diet PDF is something you can stick on the fridge and actually use: which foods to limit, which to enjoy, and what to drink. You do not need to pay for one. This guide covers where to find free, trustworthy gout diet PDFs, what a useful one should include, a printable food table you can take straight from this page, and the point at which a paid plan starts to earn its price.

Where to find a free gout diet PDF you can trust

Stick to sources with a medical or charity reputation to protect. At the time of writing, these are the ones worth checking first:

  • UK Gout Society — a patient charity with downloadable factsheets, including one on diet. Clear and written for patients.
  • Versus Arthritis (UK) — publishes a gout information booklet that covers food alongside treatment.
  • NHS — short, reliable web pages on gout that print cleanly from your browser.
  • Arthritis Foundation (US) — practical articles on eating with gout.
  • Mayo Clinic — its gout diet page is a web page rather than a PDF, but it is one of the most searched and can be printed.
  • Your own clinic. Many rheumatology departments hand out a one-page diet sheet. Ask — it will match the advice your doctor gives you.

Be wary of PDFs from sites selling supplements, and of anything promising to “cure gout in days”. A diet sheet should never tell you to stop your medication.

What a good gout diet PDF should contain

  • Drinks as well as food. Beer, spirits and sugary drinks matter as much as any single food.
  • What to eat, not only what to avoid. A list of banned foods alone is how people end up eating badly.
  • Portions, not absolutes. Red meat and most fish are “less often” foods, not forbidden ones.
  • Up-to-date thinking on vegetables. High-purine vegetables such as spinach and mushrooms do not raise gout risk the way meat and seafood do. Older sheets still get this wrong.
  • A warning about crash diets and fasting, which can raise uric acid and trigger a flare.
  • A line that says diet sits alongside medication, not instead of it.

Why a PDF alone often isn’t enough

Most people with gout have already been handed a diet sheet. The problem is rarely that they do not know what to eat. It is turning a list into meals, week after week, while working, shopping and cooking for other people. A one-page PDF tells you the rules; it does not plan Tuesday’s dinner.

That is the gap a structured plan fills. Our free 7-day gout meal plan is a good place to start. If you want something more complete — an explanation of why the foods matter, a quick-start list and a follow-along week with options — The End of Gout is the paid programme we have looked at most closely. Read our honest review first, including what its marketing oversells.

Free or paid? Start free. If you have read the leaflets before and your eating never really changed, a structured plan may be what was missing. If you already follow a diet sheet happily, save your money.

How much can diet do?

Realistically, a good diet lowers uric acid by a modest amount — around 0.3–1.3 mg/dL — and helps with weight, which has a larger effect over time. That can be enough if your level is only a little high. If it is well above the target of under 6 mg/dL (360 µmol/L), or you have frequent attacks, diet works best alongside a urate-lowering medicine. Our allopurinol guide explains how that treatment works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a free gout diet PDF from the NHS?

The NHS publishes its gout advice as web pages, which you can print or save as a PDF from your browser. For a dedicated downloadable sheet, UK patient charities are the better source.

What is the best diet for gout?

A diet low in organ meats, certain oily fish and shellfish, beer, spirits and sugary drinks, and rich in vegetables, low-fat dairy, whole grains and water. Mediterranean-style and DASH-style eating fit this pattern well.

Are high-purine vegetables bad for gout?

No. Studies have not found that vegetables like spinach, asparagus or mushrooms raise gout risk the way meat and seafood do. You can keep eating them.

Can a gout diet replace medication?

Not for most people with established gout. Diet helps, but if your doctor has prescribed a urate-lowering medicine, keep taking it and discuss any change with them.

What to read next

Print the table, put it where you make your coffee, and change one drink before you change anything else. That single swap often does more than a week of worrying about food.
